PRIMUS INTER PARES

Each week a student will be chosen to be interviewed by a fellow student so we can get to know each other better. The Latin "Primus Inter Pares" was chosen because it was the language of the Roman Empire where Jesus was born. In English, "Primus Inter Pares" means first among equals.

____________

Gary Burkemper

Gary is 13 years old and in 7th grade. Out of his dad, mom, and older sister and older brother, his older sister is most like him. His family has two dogs and likes playing billiards/pool. They have traveled to many places, including Washington DC, North Carolina, and Cincinnati. Gary likes to take his puppy for walks and his favorite animal is a dogfish. His favorite color is red, his favorite food is stir fry, and his favorite drink is Fitz’s root beer. Gary is usually carrying a book. His current book is from The Mysterious Benedict Society series. Books are the best thing about school, and resolving conflicts with other students is the hardest. Gary likes going to Speech and Debate Club and was one of the students who requested an engineering club. He likes watching Rockford Files and Star Trek. His favorite sport is basketball. If he could only take one thing to a deserted island, Gary would take his brother’s pike (a wooden spear for fishing and hunting). The hardest thing he has experienced is surviving the accidental hit to his head from a baseball bat. He wants to be a Forensic Entomologist when he grows up. Interviewed by Vinny Satory

NEW CLUB:

As the end of the school year approaches, we find ourselves needing to slow down and use strategies to remind ourselves to relax. Beginning April 20, students have the opportunity to learn relaxation strategies after school from 2:45 to 3:30. These relaxation strategies include mindfulness, motor planning, prayer and yoga-based exercises to increase body awareness. The relaxation strategies will be taught by Mrs. Morales and Mrs. Siebert, using the Stop & Relax curriculum. We will meet every Wednesday until the last week of school. Please email Mrs. Morales or call the front office if you are interested in participating.

Speech and Debate joined forces this week to debate whether or not students should be punished for cursing (obviously student picked!). Mrs. Cook prepared Bible excerpts to support the students' claim on both sides. These excerpts helped Lili, Gary, Teddy and Viinny speak longer on their side of the argument. All students successfully spoke for three minutes and also learned about using their “persuasive body language” as they spoke. This body language was compared to a lawyer or judge in court. Meanwhile, John Paul and Lil took notes in order to rebut the debaters. It was a fun meeting!

In Art this week, students explored GRAFFITI ART! They really seemed to enjoy it, but almost all students had the misconception that Graffiti is always illegal. They learned that there are actual galleries and exhibits where graffiti artists can show their work. For the project, the students wrote their name in Graffiti style.

Room 1 Notes.png

 Elementary

This week we celebrated Adoration on Tuesday and then went to Culvers. We started talking about the Earth, Sun, Moon, and why it gets dark at night and why our days are longer now. On Monday, we are going on a field trip to Dierbergs and Menards. When we studied our wants and needs in Science, we talked about the differences. We will create a list of items and questions before we go Monday. Our activities with the SLP’s have been fun for all of us this week. Thursday, they practiced giving compliments and then they wrote compliments to their friends. Great social skills for the elementary class to learn.

 Middle School 1

This week, we read Chapters 1 through 3 in the novel “Tuck Everlasting.” Students learned how taking notes and pausing to ask questions while they read is like putting the edge pieces together on a puzzle. We used “Symbolism” to discuss how reading can be overwhelming because it is like looking at all the pieces of a puzzle and not knowing what the whole picture is. As we continue reading, we will be using all the tools (Notes/Questions/and Inferencing) to see how all the details connect from chapter to chapter. Please encourage your children to continue note taking as they complete their daily reading logs!

High School

John Paul and Lili have continued reading through “Song for a Whale” at their own pace and are examining the conflicts that the main character is facing on her journey to reach Blue 55. They are noticing that there seems to be a roller coaster of successes and setbacks along the way and brainstorming what we can do when we face similar struggles. The rest of the class has started reading Act One in Macbeth. We are breaking down the main idea in each scene using the “Who-what-where” strategy to help recognize the plot of the play. We discussed moral ethics, ambition, and prophesying as Macbeth begins to contemplate his foretold fortunes. Next week we will be writing an inferential summary of what is to come in Act Two based on the textual evidence of Act One.

________________

Thank you to all the parents who remembered to SIGN OFF on their child’s READING LOG each night.

HS has continued working through Ch. 8 on the Judicial Branch. We compared the cases that were processed in the District Courts to the types of cases that are processed in the Circuit Courts. We also researched famous Supreme Court Cases in our textbook and created a comic strip that illustrated them in a way that helped classmates understand each of the cases we studied. We will be wrapping up Ch. 8 with a quiz on Monday and a Chapter Test on Tuesday next week!

Middle School 1

Students are working on multiplication and measurements. We have begun using rulers and converting feet to inches.

Middle School 2

Students are continuing to work on multiplication. This week I introduced 2 step word problems. Right now the word problems are limited to multiplication, addition, and subtraction

High School

Students are working on fractions. We are learning the process of breaking down and building mixed numbers. You have to be able to do this so we can accurately multiply and divide them.

MRS. ROETHLISBERGER

Middle School 1

On Thursday MS 1 visited the Governor’s Mansion and State Capitol in Jefferson City. There was so much to learn and see!

This week in class, MS 1 learned more about the causes of the Civil War and also learned about the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. This was the second battle during the Civil War and took place near Springfield, MO in 1861.

MRS. JACQUIN

Middle School 2

This week, a few select students completed research projects. They researched different technologies that have benefited our country throughout the years. Some examples included are Aerospace Technology and Nanotechnology.

Middle School 1 and Middle School 2

MS1 had an eventful week! They enjoyed two field trips. Monday, they went on an ecological hunt along with MS 2 and HS. The group saw many plants, flowers, deer bones, and a deer antler. It was quite educational and fun! On Thursday, MS 1 visited the Governor’s Mansion and State Capitol in Jefferson City. There was so much to learn and see!

In class MS1 & MS2 continued to study Biomes. This week covered the tropical rainforest and the water ecosystem. Next week students will choose a biome and will begin working on an individual project after Easter Break.

High School

The students completed their test over human body systems on Tuesday and are now beginning to study genetics and DNA. We will be covering sexual and asexual reproduction next week.

Elementary

As Easter is fast approaching, this week we learned about the Passover in ancient Egypt, Palm Sunday, and the Last Supper. All of these are so important to understanding why Jesus had to die so we could live forever in heaven.

Middle School 1 and

Middle School 2

This week each middle school class prayed at the Stations of the Cross in church. We took turns reading each station. Extra time was taken to explain each station and what it teaches us about how to handle our own suffering and how to help other people. We also took a deeper look at the Holy Mass and the different parts of the Mass.

High School

We had a very short week with religion due to Auction practices. We were able to discuss some of the differences between masculinity and femininity. How God created us perfectly unique and complementary to each other. Each person is a gift. A gift is only a gift if it is given away and received by another. A gift fully reveals its “worth” when given and received. If it is never given away, it never discovers how loved it is. In the same way, a human “cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself”...St. John Paul II.

Each Tuesday during lunch, a different class spends 10 minutes in the Adoration Chapel where they can sit quietly and talk with God. After Adoration, we go to Culver's for lunch.

This week it is the Middle School 1 class turn to go to Adoration!

TRANSITION WITH MRS. WALZ

Middle School

The students are learning to improve their interviewing skills. They have been learning about some common interview questions and the best way to answer these questions. The students also identified their “Dream Careers'' and determined the type of education and skills they will need to be successful.

High School

The students learned about Career Clusters and Career Pathways this week. They also completed an Interest Survey that used their interests to guide them to three possible career pathways.

Essential Skills Class They had a very busy week! Monday, the students ran the School Store. The students were responsible for stocking shelves, escorting students to and from their classroom, using a calculator to add and subtract transactions, and total the student's bank log. They also had to maintain shelves between customers.

On Wednesday, we went to QuikTrip on Sulphur Springs at Big Bend. Students made a cash purchase under $3 for the snack/drink of their choice. They also had to determine if they had enough money for their purchase. The Manager at QuikTrip was so impressed with the student’s abilities and excellent social behavior that each student received a coupon for a free drink!! I was so proud of their accomplishments!! Since the weather was so nice, we also went to Schroeder Park. Friday, we went to Aldi on Manchester Road. The students used a visual shopping list to locate items to make their lunch on Monday. The students made their purchase with a credit card.

This week ended up being a little chilly so we had our kicks inside the gym this week. Students ran and walked 50 m races and started practicing throwing and jumping events for Special Olympics. We even had time to play our favorite Sharks and Minnows game. Vinny and John Paul really improved with their throwing distance within one club practice!

Earth Day is April 22. Our Environmental Club will be planning a special activity for the week following Easter. We will keep you posted!

This past Monday, students attended the Litzsinger Road Ecology Center field trip. After taking a bus ride together, students were divided into five different groups to explore the center’s 39 acre natural resource area. Volunteers walked their group through prairie land, creek beds and trails while asking open ended questions and teaching students about clues in nature. The kids saw bones of animals and even the effects of a prescribed burn while completing a scavenger hunt. It was an amazing way to apply lessons learned this year in science!

Girls Club

We took a quick trip to McDonalds to celebrate the Cardinals Home Opener. GO CARDS!!!!
