ASH WEDNESDAY/PANCAKE BREAKFAST

FROM THE DESK OF MRS. TERRI O'DANIEL

During our staff planning and professional development time this past Friday, I took the opportunity to meet with our classroom assistants, listening to their thoughts and suggestions on a variety of topics. They have a unique perspective which enables them to identify topics and offer ideas to support staff, students, and parents. They are incredibly insightful, hands-on, and energetic. They’re the extra pair of hands that assist in classrooms and at times, work one-on-one with a student in need. They are flexible, knowledgeable, and passionate about their role in your child’s education and well-being. They are our unsung heroes who bless and support our teachers, students, and staff everyday, enabling the Academy to fulfill its mission in serving your children.

_________

PANCAKES & MORE PANCAKES

Thanks again to all our the families who attended the Kick-Off Lenten Pancake Breakfast. In past months, we've had to cancel events due to Covid. it was meaningful for all of us to be together as a school community. We were so happy you were able to spend some time with your son and daughter among others in our school community.

____________

PARENT TEACHER

CONFERENCES

THIRD QUARTER

For those of you

who may have missed the announcement, Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for the week of March 14th. We are changing the format since our last quarter seemed so recent and our communication lines are so active.Instead of having scheduled conferences, we are asking parents to request a conference. If you would like to schedule a conference, please contact Mrs.Cantareira at colleen@acadstl.org

PRIMUS INTER PARES

Each week a student will be chosen to be interviewed by a fellow student so we can get to know each other better. The Latin "Primus Inter Pares" was chosen because it was the language of the Roman Empire where Jesus was born. In English, "Primus Inter Pares" means first among equals.

CORBAN BOAIN

Corban will be 8 years old on March 22nd. He is in 2nd grade. Corban has an older brother Braxton, a younger sister Lindley, and a big yellow dog named Bader. Wrestling and playing bear hunt with his family are some of his favorite things to do. If you ask Corban who he is most like, he will say his dad.

He likes going on roller coasters at Six Flags and family vacations in Florida. Corban’s favorite food is meatballs and cheesy rice, and he likes orange juice, cranberry juice, and lemonade. At home he likes riding his electric scooter, playing with his squishy octopus, playing WII sports (tennis, baseball and bowling), and playing hangman by himself. The best thing his parents have said to him is “yes” to flying kites. If he could only take one thing to a deserted island, he would take his toy monkey. His favorite color is red and he likes “No David!” books. At school he likes math, toys, airplanes and Skittles. He likes running around in the gym at recess and he is a part of the Running Club.

Room 1 Notes.png

Elementary: We have had a busy week. On Tuesday and Thursday, the SLPs worked with our students on projects that involved and promoted social skills. We completed our study on landforms and will begin our unit on recycling and how we can protect our Earth. On Friday, we will be going on our field trip to the Myseum.

 Middle School 1:

Middle School 2:

High School:

We began our State testing for reading and writing in our Language Arts Classes this week. All the students have been doing an amazing job staying focused and working hard! In addition to our testing, the MS1 class has helped create a board game as part of their Final Assessment for the novel study on Alice in Wonderland. The game encompasses a variety of Language Arts skills including vocabulary from the novel, comprehension questions, and sequencing of events. We will resume our novel studies with the other classes next week.

Thank you to all the parents who remembered to Sign Off on their child’s READING LOG each night.

High School:

We finished Chapter Six on the presidency and have begun exploring the functions and powers of the Executive Branch. We will be working from Google Slides which will cover Chapter Seven over the next few weeks leading up to Spring Break. The class will begin by studying bureaucracy and creating a poster that illustrates the vastness of government programs, jobs, and agencies in the U.S. Our Tuesday and Thursday Social Studies class is also taking a look into the geography of the New Testament and where Jesus taught, leading up to his death on the cross and following his resurrection during this Lent season.

Middle School 1:

Middle school 2:

High School:

Both High School and Middle School completed their standardized tests this week. Testing can be difficult but the students did a nice job by staying focused and taking breaks as needed. The math portion was a two-part test. All our students worked diligently taking the time allocated for them in each area of testing.

MRS. JACQUIN

Middle School 2: They are beginning to learn about the reconstruction of Missouri after the Civil War. They also took their standardized tests. All of Middle School 2 was very respectful of each other during the testing process.

MRS. ROETHLISBERGER

Middle School 1: They learned the story behind the Star Spangled Banner and the War of 1812. We are about to begin to research the War of 1812 next week. We are also learning about the Missouri Compromise.

High School spent most of the week completing their standardized testing but also continued to learn about the systems of the human body. This included a discussion about the organs in the systems and the effect they have on the body and reviewed where they belong and their function (jobs).

Middle School 1 and Middle School 2 spent most of the week completing their standardized testing. We began learning about the water cycle.

Each Tuesday during lunch, a different class spends 10 minutes in the Adoration Chapel where they can sit quietly and talk with God. After Adoration, we head down to Culvers for lunch.

Next week is the Middle School 1 turn!

TRANSITION WITH MRS. WALZ

High School prepared this week to cook the pancakes for the Parent Pancake Breakfast. They were quick learners and were able to learn the "flip" pretty fast. The pancakes were tasty as well.

Middle School 1 and Middle School 2 this week students continued to work on taking others perspective. Students practiced some banking skills by delving deeper into their school wide economy and banking log. They even had time for games to practice social skills.

WRITING WITH MR. NOTESTINE

Elementary: The students continue to show improvement with their handwriting and/or fine motor skills related to their hand movement.

Middle School 1 and Middle School 2: Both classes have completed their third composition of this semester. Students continue to show iimprovement in all areas of the writing process.

High School: The writing class did not meet this week due to a conflict in the schedule, but I’m looking forward to working with them in weeks to come.

Running club was thankfully outside, but very breezy. The runners felt the impact of having weeks off, cooler weather, and being outside rather than inside. It was much harder than we remembered it to be! Our distance runner, JJ, went almost 4 miles with Mrs. Cook! We’d like to thank Mrs. Zigaitis and Mrs.Delhougne for joining us this week! Please note there will be no running club on Thursday, March 17 because of Parent Teacher Conferences.

The debate students met in St.Joe’s courtyard and developed arguments for and against the importance of homework. We also worked on how to create a rebuttal to a point given by another team. We had lots of laughs trying to figure out reasons to support homework!

The speech students met under a tree to practice performing humorous duet skits such as “Do You Want Fries With That?” Standing in the warm winter sun they had fun keeping their script from blowing away, and eventually moved to a more sheltered spot near the playground.

Great teamwork out in nature!

In art this week, students worked on a special project for the ASTL AUCTION! We can’t wait for everyone to see how well these turned out!
