FROM THE DESK OF…
Terri O’Daniel, Executive Director
THANK YOU!
Traditionally, the Academy has honored the Blessed Mother as the holy Mother of Jesus every May for the past 19 years. As we crown Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth, we celebrate the beauty of motherhood as exemplified by the love she shared with her Son as He was growing up. May we look towards her during trying times in our children’s lives and take comfort knowing she is traveling with us on our journey here on earth.

This week we learned that not all days are peaches and cream. On Tuesday, we had A Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and we felt like moving to Australia just like Alexander in the well-known children’s book. Sometimes things just don’t go as planned but it’s not the end of the world. We just had to stop, have a class meeting, and remember that we are a family, and we care about one another. On Wednesday, we came back and had the BEST day ever! We learned and played together, getting all our work done while celebrating every good thing that we did. Sometimes we just need to be reminded that we are truly amazing. Later in the week, our preschool friends, The Frogs, came to visit us, sharing everything they learned about raising butterflies. We were able to observe their beautiful butterflies for the entire day! Before they left, we invited them to “sail away” as we heard the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Another fun thing was having a playdate with Mr. Evans, Jonathan’s dad!
We love our high school friends, who have been volunteering to spend time with us! We celebrated The Blessed Mother on Friday with a beautiful ceremony.
Happy Mother’s Day to all our extraordinary mothers! We love you and appreciate you!
This week we tried to increase our speeds on Typing.com. Some of the students worked hard on understanding more about budgeting too. We ended our week with a donut party and made pretty things for the mothers/women in our lives.
MIDDLE SCHOOL 1 & 3
We are reading the book The Great American Dust Bowl. This is a novel based on one of America’s most catastrophic natural events. After our daily reading, we had a classroom discussion stating 3 facts we learned from the book.
MIDDLES SCHOOL 2
We are learning that many businesses and industries make up Missouri’s economy. We are also learning that trade is important to Missouri businesses.
HIGH SCHOOL 2
We are learning how King James I used his power. We are also learning to identify the “Petition of Rights”.
MIDDLE SCHOOL 1 & 3
In poetry, students started creating their book of poems with their Bio Poem and Cinquain. We also completed a Haiku and Concrete Poem.
MIDDLE SCHOOL 2
Middle school students are increasing their independence in reading and answering comprehension questions about interesting sports.
HIGH SCHOOL 2 – WRITING
We continue working away on our Opinion Essay drafts. We added interesting words, and transitions, and fine-tuned our opening and closing paragraphs. Students will peer edit their final copy at the end of next week.
MIDDLE SCHOOL 1 & 3
HIGH SCHOOL 2
This week, students worked on a variety of skills, including problem-solving. They were encouraged to use different strategies and techniques to solve problems, allowing them to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I monitored the progress of each student and provided feedback to help them improve their understanding of math concepts. I provided one-on-one support to students who needed additional assistance.
MIDDLE SCHOOL 2
This week in math, students focused on independently strengthening their math skills with teacher support provided as needed. Students were encouraged to work at their own pace and level, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts they were learning. I provided one-on-one support to students who needed additional assistance.
MIDDLE SCHOOL 2
This week we continued our unit on the solar system learning all about meteors, comets, and asteroids. Students followed the life of a meteoroid from the time it breaks free from the asteroid belt as meteor to the point where it reaches the earth’s surface as a meteorite. Did you know that shooting stars aren’t stars at all? All those wishes were wasted on a rock!
MIDDLE SCHOOL 1 & 3
Our classes continued working on their Solar System Books while learning more about the other objects found in space, from asteroids, meteors, and comets to dwarf planets, and the mysterious dark matter. There is a lot of cool information found on solarsystem.nasa.gov. You can even track the current distance of each planet from the sun in orbit! Next week, we will be zooming in to take a closer look at the many moons in our galaxy!
HIGH SCHOOL 2:
Our end-of-year review on Ch. 8 was enlightening as we delved a little deeper into the magnitude of the electromagnetic spectrum. We watched a documentary that discussed how the electromagnetic spectrum is used to help determine the temperature of the stars and as a result, the distances between them. We culminated the unit with an escape room activity encompassing five levels of questions revolving around the electromagnetic spectrum. Each correct answer held a piece of the code we needed to crack to get out of class! Looking forward to shocking results next week as the students recap what they have learned about electricity!
ELEMENTARY
We focused on lessons of prayers and sharing.
MIDDLE SCHOOL 1, 2 & 3
HIGH SCHOOL 2
We finished our review of Pentecost and the descent of the Holy Spirit.
