Happy New Year! The students and teachers have embraced their new classes and are settling into a routine. In the next few weeks, we will celebrate the gift of Life and Catholic Schools Week. While some fun and meaningful activities are planned, we will keep our schedules and routines to minimize disruptions and continue learning. Thank you all for attending parent conferences for your child. Having a positive parent partnership is so important to ensure your child’s school success.

For school closing due to inclement weather, the Academy will notify families through One Call Now (our automated calling system) and on Channels 2 and 5 School Closure listings.

We will learn about the Flag for each Country, learn basic greetings and vocabulary in the native language, create art and taste some of the native foods, and introduce popular songs/dances in their culture.

These will occur Tuesday, January 16 – Thursday, Jan 18, 2024, before and after school. If your child is in Mrs. Lewis’ or Miss Hansen’s class, please use the following link to sign up for a conference time.

Children have many different learning styles and interests. In lower grades, children’s skills and abilities can vary significantly. Being in a small school allows us to be flexible when developing lessons and activities. Although we sometimes come together as a class, we spend more time in small groups or working one-on-one. This week, we were excited to begin a new adventure. We combined with Ms. Hansen’s class for the first hour each day, dividing into three groups. Groups will focus on language and communication, early reading skills, and deeper reading comprehension.
We continue to work on addition and subtraction in math and sometimes even division! We continue to count school days and are very close to reaching the 100th day!!
This week, we learned about honesty and why it is an important habit to build into our lives. It is not always easy to be honest and tell the truth, but telling a lie can negatively impact our relationships. It was fun to share stories about challenging encounters with honesty and work through them together! We began to combine reading groups with Mrs. Lewis’ class this week to allow us more flexibility in groupings. We are lucky to have such a small and close-knit school community that allows us to support each student! In the comprehension group, we practiced identifying fact versus opinion while reading. The students became official fact-finder detectives as they analyzed cases and pulled facts from witness statements to solve various cases! In math, the students continue to focus on their skills. Some of our students learned strategies to help them solve multiplication problems, while others learned about measurement! In social studies, we looked at three different types of government, namely democracies, monarchies, and dictatorships. We will continue to compare and contrast these forms of government next week. In science, we learned about the characteristics and needs of living things and investigated objects around us to determine if they are living or nonliving things.
In history, we began a new unit about the growing conflict between Britain and the American colonies and what caused the American Revolution.
This week in Independent Living, we explored more about what it means to live on our own by preparing our house to be a safe place to live. We discussed home safety and repairs as well as watched some videos on the definition of “home.” The “home” videos explored various individuals living on their own or with others and what that looked like. Next week we will introduce kitchen safety to help prepare for cooking as well as continuing to study about home and what it means to us. In history, we have been learning about the various parts of a map and how to read them. This week in ELA students started learning about the Enlightenment Period. Our three main American Authors of this time include Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine. We have been getting a thorough biographical background on Thomas Jefferson to better understand how his writing style was influenced and what kind of an impact it had on American Culture and Literature. We began analyzing the “Declaration of Independence” and will compare this to other works by Jefferson next week including the “Notes on the State of Virginia”. Our Environmental Science Classes have started Ch. 4 Lesson One on Biodiversity. We are all focusing on the importance of biodiversity, how everything is interconnected in life, and what impact the human race has had and continues to have on the loss of biodiversity.
