ACADEMY BUSINESS
Academy Pet:
Our pet, Peeps, is growing! Thank you to the families who have helped support our class bunny. We adopted Peeps in November; he has been a delightful addition to our classroom. Students are eager to care for him and keep him company each day. He is a great reminder to stay regulated because he needs a calm, quiet environment, and the kids empathize. We love having him but also want to ensure he is comfortable and safe. His current playpen is plastic; unfortunately, he has begun to chew through it. We are looking for contributions to purchase a more sufficient exercise area. Any donations are greatly appreciated. If you and your child would like to take him home over the weekend, reach out to Mrs. Hodge, and she will add you to the calendar. All supplies will be provided!

This week, we had several opportunities to work with partners. Working with partners promotes conversation, interaction, and problem-solving. We used a strategy called shared reading. During shared reading, children build fluency by reading aloud to each other. This type of reading allows students to teach and learn from one another. During math class, we practiced taking turns while practicing our additional facts. Math facts fluency will help children as they solve more complex problems. As the children worked, they enjoyed interacting and problem-solving together. The highlight of the week was having the opportunity to visit the residents at Family Partners Home. This is a beautiful home that provides care to persons with Dementia. The residents smiled as the children went around, introducing themselves and shaking their hands. Before we left, we sang two songs: You Are My Sunshine and Proud to Be an American. The children did an excellent job!

We had so much fun performing our songs for the residents at a nursing home this Friday! It is always nice to spread joy to those in our community. One of the residents said, “On this cloudy day, you all brought some sunshine into our lives.” The students from the elementary and the intermediate rooms put on a beautiful performance! They were all singing loudly, smiling, and interacting with the residents.
In reading, we learned about making inferences from a text and practiced using this skill to deepen our comprehension. We make inferences every day, but it can be a challenging skill to apply to academic tasks. In science, we learned about ecosystems and investigated the traits plants and animals have to help them survive in that specific ecosystem. In social studies, the students are wrapping up research on different types of governments. Our class has been working hard, and I’m proud of each of them for the hard work and excitement they bring into the classroom daily!
This week in ELA, we discussed Conflict as we began reading our novel My Brother Sam is Dead. Students have been exploring what it is like to put yourself in the main character’s shoes. Our novel is set during the Revolutionary War, and our main character, Tim Meeker, is torn between his brother, who has joined the Patriots, and his father, a Loyalist. We will continue learning about the war from the colonists’ point of view on both sides of the spectrum. In science, we began Ch.4, Lesson 2, on measuring diversity. Students were introduced to Taxonomy and categorizing species. We will begin a research project on endangered species next week. Look in Google Classroom Chapter slides for key terms from lessons 2 and 3.
This week in history, we continued learning about the causes of the American Revolution. We studied things like taxation without representation, various acts passed by the British Parliament, and events like the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre. We will review these causes and take a quiz on them next week.
This week in math, we worked on individualized programs in IXL. We also worked on math worksheets from their binder.
In writing this week, we worked on nouns and verbs. We had classroom discussions on how to identify a basic sentence. We also wrote basic sentences together as a class.
In our Independent Living class, we discussed local transportation. We spent time in Google Classroom getting caught up on classroom assignments.
