ACADEMY OF ST. LOUIS CLUBS
This week our Cultural club took a trip to Romania! We learned how to greet one another in Romanian, explored the diverse history and culture of one of the oldest civilizations on record (the Dacians), and played an Animal Vocabulary Bingo Game with the chance to win an actual Romanian Chocolate bar. Everyone went home with a prize in the end and we had a blast!
We will be traveling to Scotland next week and hearing from a very special visitor, Mr. Jeffries!
In the wonderful world of place value, we are finally using hundreds, reaching 107 school days.
We enjoyed the beautiful weather, had extra fun outside, and celebrated mass as a school family.
Mr. Foley celebrated his birthday this week, and we enjoyed making it extra special.
Happy Birthday to Mr. Foley!

Our reading group began to learn about figurative language. This week we focused on identifying and understanding similes and metaphors. We had a lot of fun practicing our new reading skills through a game of bowling, where we had to identify the sentence as a simile or a metaphor to take a turn bowling. In math, we began to work on measurement skills, such as learning how to read and use a ruler to find an object’s length. On Friday, the students began to apply these measurement skills to make a treasure map! In science this week, we wrapped up our investigation of the different types of ecosystems as we looked into the forest, the desert, and the rainforest. In social studies, we learned about important sports players and musicians of Black History Month.
Both groups finished reading our novel, My Brother Sam is Dead this week in ELA. Group 1 will begin working on their book reports next week while Group 2 will be reviewing for a comprehension test over the novel to be taken on Thursday, February 29. Our science classes began putting their research into their Google Slides presentations and will be presenting their Endangered Species on February 29 and March 1.
In history, we have continued to learn about the American Revolution. We learned about the Battle of Bunker Hill and George Washington.
This week in math, we worked on individualized math from our math folder. We also worked on individualized programs in IXL.
We slowed down our pace in My Brother Sam is Dead week and narrowed in on some of the complex vocabulary found within the book. We will continue reading Chapters 9 and 10 next week. Please remind students that their ELA Bingo Sheets are due on Thursday, February 29th. Even if they do not complete them, they will receive points for every box that they were able to do. Students who do complete their entire sheet will have the opportunity to watch a movie on Friday during class and they will be entered into our drawing for an Amazon gift card. Thank you again for all your support at home. In science, we began taking the research from our Endangered Species Projects and using the information to create a Conservation Board Game. We also learned about Ecosystem Services and Staple Crops in Ch.4 Lesson 5!
In Independent living class, we took an interest inventory that showed careers that we might be interested in pursuing. We are also working on gathering career-specific information on those careers.
This week in writing we continue to work on simple sentences on different topics, and also work on simple sentences as a group. We also have been working on typing.com.
In history, we have started learning about the American Revolution. We went through an overview of the revolution and learned about the Boston Tea Party to learn about why the colonists were upset with Britain.
