Today, the Academy hosted our annual Open House. We had the largest turnout ever! Many interested families. One filled out an application before she left. Our waitlist is growing! Thanks to our staff who gave up this beautiful day to help give tours and share their love of the Academy with our guests.
Our ASTL Parent Series continues this week with a Zoom Session with Jessie Hautly from Pathways for Independence on Thursday, November 9, at 7:00 p.m. A link will come out later this week with more information.
PRINCIPAL’S CORNER:
Positive parent partnerships are essential when supporting students with unique needs. We work closely with our parents to understand the needs of their children and develop strategies to support their learning and growth at school. We recognize that parents provide valuable insights into their child’s strengths, challenges, and preferences, while we, as a school, can offer expertise and guidance on best practices and resources. Together, we can ensure that your child receives the best education and support. It may not always be easy, but by working together toward the same goal, we can make a meaningful difference in your children’s lives.
PICTURE DAY
Picture Day is Wednesday, November 8, in the morning. Students should wear their Academy of St. Louis uniform. Please take a look at the Klings and Things order form below.
VETERAN’S DAY
We will honor Academy Veterans and their families who have served or continue to serve in the military on Friday, November 10 at 10 am in the cafeteria. If you have a service member you would like to honor, please email a picture with name, rank, and branch. If you know a Veteran who would like to attend our Veteran’s Day celebration,
please contact Kathy Lagos at klagos@acadstl.org
We will be happy to send them an invitation to attend.
We are also looking for any Boy or Girl Scouts who want to help with the flag ceremony.
Thank you to all the family members of students at the Academy who have served or continue to serve in the military.
It’s true! Our class family has started a band! Our favorite musician, Ezekiel George, is our band director as well as our violin player. We use our imagination, using things around our classroom as instruments. Our favorite song to perform is a country song called “Save Your Pennies” a Money Song for Kids by Waterford. We love to use music and dance to learn new concepts. In addition to starting a band, we had a lot of fun with apples and pumpkins. We learned what happens when the fruit inside an apple is exposed to oxygen. We made predictions, predicting the number of seeds that would be found in several different apples. We tasted the different kinds of apples and graphed which ones we liked best. We even went around the school, taking a poll and asking everyone to share their favorite apple. The Red Delicious had by far the most votes!
We took the seeds out of two small pumpkins and used our 100 Charts to count the number of seeds. We had over 400 pumpkin seeds! We discovered it was easy to count all the seeds by first making groups of tens. We became mad scientists as we used our pumpkins to create a mini pumpkin volcano!
During our read-aloud, we continue to explore different characters who are making the world a better place by practicing kindness and empathy.
Finally, a very special HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Ms. Baalmann. We love you, appreciate you, and wish you the best year ever!
We had a great time celebrating Halloween this week! On Tuesday, we dressed up for our All Saints Day Parade. I loved seeing everyone’s costumes! We discussed accepting others and treating people kindly with Spookley the Square Pumpkin. In science, we experimented with candy corn in different solutions and made predictions of how vinegar, baking soda, and salt would change the candy corn. I am so proud of our class for working so hard!
This week in ELA, students continued to unravel the layers of our characters in The Witch of Blackbird Pond. We were introduced to a new character who seems to be locally known as a witch. This theme carried over in social studies as we learned how easily it is to spread unfounded rumors with our very own “witch hunt” on Halloween. In science, students stepped into the role of meteorologists and learned all about the Coriolis effect and prevailing winds. They did a little research on hurricanes and the damage they can cause.
This week, we enjoyed our annual All Saints Day Parade by dressing up as our favorite saint. We also reviewed what we learned from the economy museum by creating our own money. We each enjoyed creating our dollars and reviewing information about how we spend and save money in our economy.
